LS97Lifesong’s Story

LS97Lifesong is a Congolese hip-hop group formed in 2012, originally from North-Kivu in a town called Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With its two founding members, LastBorn Mganga and Lameck Mwalimu both from a Goma town district by the name of KATOYI / Nyabushonge. As a music group, LS97Lifesong is also in charge of a local Hip Hop and Rap school with a mission to fish for raw talents in the streets of Goma town and train them to become renowned rappers aiming to make hip-hop part of their culture. 

Founded in 2012 by Lameck Mwalimu and LastBorn Mganga, the name LS97Lifesong came from their first songs which were often about the real day to day life of their society, and these brought them up to notability around 2013, then fans started to call them Lifesong thereafter they understood that they were singing about life music because it was them who supported their music on their own and that became the music of Life and realized by the time their music and efforts are going to pay off some day. 

Talking about their achievements; they have already carried out several audio-video projects, concerts, festivals, workshops, shows, to name a few. It is among the things that make their group known in their province: North-Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Lawyer And Art Collector Schwanda Rountree on Collecting Without Regrets and Why Art Is an ‘Essential Part’ of Her Being

We spoke to the Washington D.C.-based collector about what she buys and how to get the most joy from living with art. - (Interview Courtesy Of Art Net)

The Washington, D.C.-based lawyer, philanthropist, and art collector Schwanda Rountree has long recognized the importance of assembling a collection carefully, with intention, and over time. “I first fell in love with art when I was a kid,” Rountree said. “Whenever I got a chance to be surrounded by art, I was in a joyful space.”

Though art was always a passion and important part of Rountree’s life, it was her move to D.C. after graduating from law school that spurred her to become more actively involved in the art world. She began exploring the city’s many art institutions and venues, and started attending artist talks and salons. “Going to museums and galleries wasn’t an outing,” said Rountree. “It was an essential part of my being.”

Today, Rountree runs her own art consultancy in the capital, and has served on the leadership boards of various cultural entities, including the former Corcoran Gallery of Art and as an executive board member of the James A. Porter Colloquium on African American Art at Howard University. She is a frequent speaker on panels on the subject of art collecting. And with the sharp eye clients seek her out for, she has amassed an enviable art collection featuring works by Sanford Biggers, Nina Chanel Abney, Cassi Namoda, Kehinde Wiley, and many other top Black contemporary artists working today.

We recently spoke to Rountree about what she collects, how she likes to display it, and her thoughts on art’s relationship to style. Read on for the interview below.

What was your most recent purchase?


My most recent addition to the collection was a small Cassi Namoda painting. I love her work.

Which works or artists are you hoping to add to your collection this year?

I would like to add a Naudline Pierre to my collection. I admire her art practice and the depth of her paintings. I also love Somaya Critchlow’s work.

What is the most expensive work of art that you own?

I can’t answer that question!

Where do you buy art most frequently?

I have a number of galleries that I enjoy supporting in New York and Los Angeles. I have been following the artwork presented by James Cohan’s gallery for many years.


Is there a work you regret purchasing?

There is no artwork I regret acquiring. I love supporting artists.

How do you like to display your artwork?

I love to fill every part of my home with art, including stairwells. There are salon-style installations comprised of various sizes and mediums—paintings, drawings, photographs—all in conversation with each other. The work should live with usorganically throughout various spaces of the home, so that we can enjoy it.

What work do you have hanging above your sofa? What about in your bathroom?


I have windows behind my sofa, so nothing there. Funny that you ask what’s in my bathroom: I have a cool Nina Chanel Abney poster that she made during her residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It’s framed behind glass. Moisture and humidity are always a concern with artwork in a bathroom space, so tapestries and posters offer good alternatives.

What work do you wish you had bought when you had the chance?

There are so many artworks that I wish I had bought when I had a chance, especially when the artists were early in their careers and the work may have been more affordable or accessible. There are too many to name…

What does art mean to you?

Art means everything to me: culture, visual stimulation, legacy, and joy.

What does style mean to you? How do you define the relationship between art and style, in your view?

Style to me means creative freedom and confidence. I don’t know if there is a relationship between art and style. Maybe freedom of expression? I leave it up to the artists as to what it means to them on a personal level…I’m just happy to be able to experience art as a collector and custodian.

Jailbreak Stencil By Banksy Will Sell For £10m To Turn Reading Prison Into Art Centre

The now-defunct jail once held playwright Oscar Wilde on charges of gross indecency between 1895 and 1897.

The street artist Banksy is selling a stencil he painted on the side of Reading prison in a bid to save the former jail from being turned into a block of flats. The work, painted in March, shows a prisoner escaping on a rope of bedsheets tied to a typewriter. Proceeds from its sale, expected to fetch more than £10m, will support Reading Borough Council’s bid to buy the site and turn it into an arts centre.

A petition organised by the Save the Reading Gaol campaign confirms that “Banksy has indeed pledged the artwork to the people of Reading on the understanding that all the proceeds from its sale are used to secure the purchase of the gaol and convert it into an arts centre.” The stencil is currently on show at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the exhibition Grayson’s Art Club. Banksy’s authentication body, Pest Control, declined to say if any private offers have yet been received for the work.

The historic prison, which Oscar Wilde was once held, has been under threat of redevelopment after the UK Ministry of Justice put it up for sale in late 2019. Two bids have since been fallen through and the site was put back on the market in June. The council submitted a £2.6m bid early 2020, which was rejected; the Ministry of Justice says it is currently considering new bids.

Banksy told the Sunday Times: “I promised myself I’d paint the wall even before I knew what it was. I’m passionate about it now, though. Oscar Wilde is the patron saint of smashing two contrasting ideas together to create magic. Converting the place that destroyed him into a refuge for art feels so perfect, we have to do it.” Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading East, tweeted that “it’s the best Christmas present Reading could wish for”.

The now-defunct jail, which was permanently closed in 2013, is a Grade II-listed building and has art historical significance as the place that the playwright Oscar Wilde was detained for gross indecency between 1895 and 1897.

Wilde's association with the building has led it to be described by Reading council as a "LGBT heritage site". In 2016, the public art organisation Artangel organised Inside: Artists and Writers in Reading Prison, an exhibition featuring work by artists including Ai Weiwei, Marlene Dumas and Wolfgang Tillmans. Musician Patti Smith and the actor Ben Whishaw paid homage to Wilde by reading De Profundis, a harrowing letter written to his lover Lord Alfred Douglas, in the prison chapel.

Looted Benin Cockerel Is Returning To Nigeria According To The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC Plans

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, plans to return a brass cockerel looted in 1897 by British troops from the royal palace in Benin to Nigeria, and is in contact with the relevant authorities there, a spokeswoman says.

The cockerel, the only work in the collection to have been plundered in the sacking of Benin, dates from the middle of the 18th century and was donated to the museum in 1955.

“The National Gallery is eager to work with the relevant parties in Nigeria, including the federal government of Nigeria, to transfer ownership and possession of this object on a mutually agreeable schedule and terms,” the spokeswoman says.

After the 1897 looting, artefacts from Benin’s royal palace were sold off and scattered around the world; Benin objects are held by more than 160 international museums, including several in the US.

But now many museums are planning to return them to Nigeria. The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African Art has removed its Benin bronzes from display and is planning to repatriate the looted artefacts. The University of California’s Fowler Museum has also said it plans talks with the Nigerian authorities on the future of 18 objects in its collection from the Kingdom of Benin.

In mid-October, Germany and Nigeria signed a memorandum of understanding setting out a timetable for the return of about 1,100 Benin artefacts from German museums, with the first repatriations envisaged in the second quarter of 2022.

The same month, two British universities restituted looted artefacts to Nigeria: the University of Aberdeen handed over the bronze head of an oba, or king, and Jesus College Cambridge returned a bronze sculpture of a cockerel similar to the National Gallery’s.
